With Broadcom’s sweeping changes to VMware licensing and support roadmaps culminating in October 2027, IT leaders must strategically evaluate the future of their virtualization infrastructure. Organizations are at a critical point. They must balance the immediate risks of cost escalation against the long-term operational impact of a full platform migration.

Decision Time

The hard deadline is October 11, 2027.

General support ends for many VMware vSphere 8 perpetual-license environments. After that, organizations may lose access to:

  • Security updates

  • Bug fixes

  • Hardware compatibility certification

What is VMware – and why is it so Important?

VMware is the world’s largest provider of cloud computing services and visualization software. It’s a vital component of the modern cloud ecosystem, providing much of the software that underpins cloud computing.

Businesses across industries have come to rely on VMware’s software to optimize their IT infrastructure. That’s why the recent licensing changes have such massive implications.

What's changing?

Broadcom's operational overhaul of VMware has eliminated perpetual licenses in favor of a subscription-only model, resulting in significant price increases and a reduction from 168 product bundles to four. Additionally, the transition has increased minimum purchase requirements and restructured the partner ecosystem to favor large-scale private cloud platforms. You can read more about the VMware operational changes:

  • Shift to Subscription Licensing: Broadcom stopped selling VMware perpetual licenses and moved to a subscription-based model. Existing perpetual licenses still work, but you cannot renew support services without an active contract.

  • Higher Minimum Core Requirement: The minimum purchase jumped from 16 cores to 72 cores. This may affect smaller or mid-size organizations they may pay for more cores than they actually use.

  • End of White Label Program: This model ended on October 31, 2025. Smaller VMware Cloud Service Providers (VCSPs) using under 3,500 cores can no longer buy licenses through partners, cutting off their market access.

  • Late Renewal Penalties: Renewing a subscription license late brings financial penalty (20-25%).

  • Contract Expiry Rules: Customers can no longer renew contracts early to reduce their core count.

  • Fewer Product Bundles: VMware cut its 168 product bundles down to just four core options: VCF, VVF, VVS, and VVEP.

  • Massive Cost Increases: Customers reporting major price hikes.

  • License Audits: Perpetual license holders with expired support may receive cease-and-desist letters to stop them from using any software updates or patches released after their support ended

9-18 months

is a typical migration timeline (complex systems 12-36 months).**

You don't have to move. But you do need a plan.

To help guide you through this transition, here are four strategic pathways:

STAY (Move to VMware Subscription)
  >> Zero migration disruption

  >> Retain on-premises infrastructure
  >> Keep existing operational workflows and skills

  >> Higher licensing costs
  >> Risk of unnecessary software bundling

Managed Hardware (Hosted Private Cloud)
  >> Lower to zero capital investment required
  >> Dedicated, third-party data center
  >> Provider owns and manages infrastructure
  >> Predictable operational costs
  >> Businesses looking for simplified operations

Managed Cloud (Hyperscaler Migration)
  >> Reduce infrastructure management
  >> Simplifies cloud adoption
  >> Keeps management tools while gaining scalability

  >> Long-term operational costs
  >> Cloud egress fees can accumulate quickly

Refactor (Platform Refactoring)
  >> Move completely to alternative platform

  >> Ability to modernize infrastructure
  >> Upfront migration effort and downtime risks
  >> Requires resources and retraining
  >> Evaluate IT team expertise and readiness

Bottom Line

Evaluate. Plan. Execute.

Start planning now to maintain support and keep your options open beyond October 2027.
